New Delhi [India], September 17: Living on the Edge: A Guide to Living to the Fullest by Haresh Sippy is a reflective work that explores the tensions between routine and risk, control and freedom, and the expectations of life and the search for personal truth. Rather than offering a fixed formula for happiness or success, the book invites readers to examine how they are actually living and whether they are making space for uncertainty, creativity and self-discovery.

The book brings together thoughts, poems and quotations shaped by Sippy’s experiences across nearly five decades of professional and creative life. At its heart is a simple but challenging question: How do you live fully without losing yourself? The reflections emerge from the contrast between a professional world that demands precision and control and creative pursuits that often depend on uncertainty, instinct and spontaneity.

This philosophy also connects with Sippy’s approach to filmmaking through his creative alter ego, Tapan Ghosh. Through this identity, he has explored what he calls “Scriptless Cinema”, an approach to filmmaking that seeks to capture life as it unfolds rather than forcing it into a predetermined script. The idea draws a parallel between an “as-built” drawing and a blueprint: while a blueprint represents what is planned, an as-built drawing records what actually happened. For Sippy, Scriptless Cinema similarly allows real experiences, conversations and human behaviour to shape the creative outcome.

The same willingness to embrace the unexpected runs through Living on the Edge. The book does not present life as a perfectly structured journey. Instead, it acknowledges mistakes, uncertainty and moments when things do not go according to plan. Its reflections suggest that a meaningful life may not come from eliminating discomfort, but from becoming more comfortable with not having everything figured out.

Sippy also challenges the idea that failure is the greatest threat to a fulfilling life. In his reflections, boredom and excessive routine can be equally limiting, particularly when they prevent people from questioning their choices or discovering new possibilities. The book encourages readers to look for self-discovery not only in dramatic turning points but also in the ordinary, connected and sometimes chaotic experiences of everyday life.

Written in accessible language, Living on the Edge seeks to connect with readers across generations. Younger readers may find encouragement to question conventional expectations, while older readers may recognize experiences of compromise, responsibility, mistakes and reinvention. Rather than positioning its reflections as definitive lessons, the book leaves room for readers to interpret them through their own experiences.

The work is also connected to Sippy’s broader belief in combining creativity with social impact. Every copy of Living on the Edge sold supports Tema India’s Youth Empowerment Program, linking the book’s message about living meaningfully with an initiative aimed at creating opportunities for young people through vocational training and empowerment.

By bringing together personal reflection, poetry, philosophy and creative ideas such as Scriptless Cinema, Living on the Edge offers more than a conventional collection of life lessons. It presents the perspective of an individual who has spent decades moving between engineering, entrepreneurship and the arts, while continuing to question the boundaries between control and creativity, planning and spontaneity, and success and fulfillment.
