Mumbai, October 28: Agritech company Jain Irrigation Systems Limited is aiming to earn biochar carbon credits of up to 19,000 tonnes as the company looks to convert its agricultural waste processing capabilities into valuable carbon removal assets. The company is looking at credits for the 2026-27 period from its industrial facility in Jalgaon where it uses a specialised gasification process to convert agricultural and food processing residues into biochar- a stable form of carbon that can remain stored in soil for extended periods or be used as a fertilizer.
In a press release, the company said it has signed a deal with London-based Supercritical to turn its traditional farm waste into certified carbon removal credits. Supercritical has the commercial architecture to turn carbon removal promises into delivered tonnes, offering Jain Irrigation the expertise to comply with regulations for the same.
Jain Irrigation has been one of the biggest players in the food processing sector, offering commercialsed agricultural technologies and research for farmers. With 81% of biochar supply already committed globally by July, Jain irrigation has a strong case which will help it gain multi year contracts.
“Most biochar projects we evaluate are building their supply chains from scratch. Jain has had theirs for 60 years. The facility is running, the feedstock comes from their own operations, and the farmer network already exists. That’s the delivery profile our buyers look for, and it’s hard to find when most of this year’s high-quality supply is already spoken for.”Steve Morrin, Supply Senior Manager at Supercritical, said.
“Our reach across millions of farmers and our scale in irrigation and tissue culture give us a strong foundation for developing biochar at scale. We understand farming systems, we have decades of experience developing agricultural technology, and we already have established channels to work with growers. Biochar creates value from agricultural residues and connects our work in water management, planting material, manufacturing, and food processing with durable carbon removal. Our partnership with Supercritical helps us scale biochar deployment.” Ajit Jain, Joint Managing Director, Jain Irrigation Systems Limited, added.
