San Francisco, November 7: OpenAI Labs, the Artificial intelligence pioneer, has raised about $11 billion in fresh funding, valuing the company at $1.25 trillion, lower than its $30 billion target. This fundraising comes amid dampened interest amongst investors in AI companies.
If OpenAI could raise $30 billion, it would have reached a $1.4 trillion valuation, but had to scale back its ambitions, Bloomberg reported earlier on Friday.
Coatue Management, SoftBank Group, T. Rowe Price, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and a few UAE-based investors led the funding round, with OpenAI reportedly keeping it open and targeting a $20 billion investment.
The muted fundraising outcomes show the challenges OpenAI faces with continued capital investments, as demand explodes but with no guarantee of profitability. OpenAI is expected to go ahead with its IPO next year after delays, even as arch rival Anthropic struggles with its own given the AI stock rout in recent weeks.
OpenAI continues to face growing scrutiny from institutional investors regarding the massive capital expenditures to build and maintain advanced data centers, chips and computing infrastructure. Investors are increasingly questioning the burn rates of these frontier AI labs against near-term monetization timelines.
OpenAI’s struggles highlight a broader challenge facing the AI industry, balancing long-term technological and commercial growth expectations against high capital expenditures and uncertainty with profitability timelines.
The latest financing for OpenAI does offer it access to substantial private capital, with investors becoming more selective about valuations and the financial outlook for major AI developers.
